Spain's digital nomad visa, created by the Startup Act, has become one of Europe's most sought-after residence routes — and one of the most misunderstood. Most guides describe the consular version and stop there, missing the two facts that change everything: applied for correctly from inside Spain, it grants a three-year initial card; and for nationals of Ibero-American countries, it can open a path to Spanish citizenship after just two years of residence. Here is how the route actually works.
Who qualifies
- Genuinely remote work. You work for companies or clients outside Spain — as an employee (with a real employment relationship of some months' standing) or as a freelancer with a solid client base. A limited share of Spanish-client income is tolerated; the core must be foreign.
- Professional qualification. A relevant university degree — or three years of professional experience in your field. Documenting the experience cleanly is a common stumbling block we handle often.
- Income around the published threshold. Roughly twice the Spanish minimum wage, evidenced through contracts, invoices and bank statements that tell one consistent story — with higher amounts for accompanying family members.
- The usual foundations. Clean criminal record, health cover, and social-security coverage arrangements for your work — the technical corner of the file where local expertise earns its keep.
Consulate or UGE: the decision that shapes your permit
There are two ways in. Apply at the Spanish consulate in your country and you receive a one-year visa, converted into a residence card after arrival. Or enter Spain legally and apply from within the country to the UGE-CE (the unit that processes these files on short statutory timescales): approved, you receive a three-year card directly — two fewer renewals, and continuity of residence that starts accruing immediately. Which path fits depends on your nationality, where you are now, and how fast you need certainty; it is the first question we settle in a consultation.
The evidence that decides these files
Refusals rarely mean ineligibility — they mean the file failed to prove eligibility. The recurring weak points: employer letters that never state the remote-work authorisation explicitly; freelance income that looks irregular because it was documented badly; social-security arrangements left vague; and family applications whose resources were not scaled to household size. A well-built file anticipates every one of these before the UGE has to ask.
Family, taxes, and what comes after
Spouses and children can apply together with the main applicant — one project, one timeline. On tax: residence decisions and tax decisions must be made together, including the special expatriate regime election, but we do not give tax advice — we coordinate the immigration side with trusted Spanish tax specialists so both decisions are made as one.
The two-year citizenship track
Here is the part that turns a visa into a life plan. Spain grants naturalisation after ten years of residence as the general rule — but nationals of Ibero-American countries (Brazil included) qualify after just two years, and spouses of Spanish citizens after one. For a Brazilian remote professional, the digital nomad card is therefore not just three years in Spain: built correctly — continuous residence, the DELE and CCSE exams passed, a complete file ready when the window opens — it is the first half of an EU passport. We plan the citizenship arc from the first permit onwards.
How we help
VOA prepares and files Spanish digital nomad applications end to end — consular or UGE — working with vetted local lawyers, with scope and fee agreed in writing before signature and six months of aftercare once your residence is delivered. If Spain is the destination and citizenship is the horizon, start with an Initial Consultation, or read more about how we work in Spain.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply while in Spain as a tourist?
Legal stay at the moment of filing is what matters, and applying from within Spain is precisely how the three-year card is obtained. Whether your current situation allows it is a timing question we answer before anything is filed.
How fast does the UGE decide?
The statutory timescale for these files is short — measured in weeks when the file is complete. Incomplete files lose that advantage immediately, which is why completeness on day one is the whole game.
Do I lose the visa if I change employer or clients?
The permit rests on the remote-work relationship you evidenced, so material changes matter and renewals look at continuity. Structuring the file with foreseeable changes in mind is part of building it properly.
Does time on the digital nomad visa count towards citizenship?
Legal residence in Spain counts — which is exactly why the two-year Ibero-American track makes this route so powerful for Brazilian and Latin American professionals. The residence must be genuinely continuous; we plan it that way from the start.
